It's insane how you can find yourself lost in the beauty of God on Easter and the very next day be lost once again in destructive thoughts.
That was me yesterday. As I walked my dog Timber, I internally beat myself up because for not fitting into my own boxes. Then the worry came in like a tidal wave: the overwhelming anxiety of the many what-ifs. It's always exhausting. I hate the path my mind takes. Yet sometimes I slip soundlessly into the cycle anyway.
On this particular day, God had a reminder for me as I walked, staring at the sidewalk, lost in thought.
It came in a very peculiar package, as messages from God tend to.
A little girl rushed out onto her 3rd story balcony as I passed by, calling out to me, "HI!!!"
I looked up and smiled. "Hello."
"I GOT A NEW TOOTHBRUSH!!!" She yelled down, holding it out for me to see it.
I told her that was awesome.
Then I walked away, tugging my curious dog with me, before her mom came out and thought I was a creepy stranger.
But that moment stuck with me.
Here's a little girl. Pumped about a freaking toothbrush.
A toothbrush, for Pete's sake.
And I thought to myself...God loves kids. He loves them because they do stuff like showing off their toothbrush to a total stranger. He loves unadulterated passion. He actually HATES worry. As Jon Foreman told me once, "We're actually commanded NOT to fear."
Sometimes it takes a little girl yelling gleefully at you to realize that's how God wants you to be. Stoked about the little things. Living in the blessings. Counting them up, one by one, and being overjoyed at the goodness and graciousness of God the whole time.
Lesson learned.
